Prior to the running of Race 8, Trainer D Meagher advised the Stewards that his instructions to Jockey R Woodworth, the rider of HERO CHAMPION, if circumstances permit, to try and ride in a forward position.

Prior to the start, HADES (SY Moon) was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. Acting on veterinary advice that HADES was found to be lame near-fore, the Panel of Stewards ordered its withdrawal at 2219Hrs. In terms of MRA Regulation 24.2, it must be presented to an Official Veterinary Surgeon prior to being declared to race again.

HERO CHAMPION and CATCH ME GREAT (M Nunes) both jumped away awkwardly.

Shortly after the start, NATIVE LUCK (I Saifudin) shifted outwards making contact with the hindquarters of UNCLE LUCKY (A Munro). This resulted in UNCLE LUCKY being turned inwards slightly and NATIVE LUCK having to be steadied when crowded onto CATCH ME GREAT.

BROTHER WIND (E Aslam) and NATIVE LUCK bumped on a number of occasions when both horses raced keenly in the backstraight.

Near the 600m, SUPER BALL (TH Koh) momentarily steadied when racing tight to the inside of SOUTHERN DRAGON (B Vorster).

SOUTHERN DRAGON was momentarily held up making the turn into the straight.

UNCLE LUCKY had difficulty obtaining clear running between the 350m and the 200m.

A subsequent veterinary examination was requested on LADRONE (M Kellady) which revealed no apparent abnormality.

Jockey Saifudin, the rider of NATIVE LUCK, reported that after receiving interference earlier in the race, the gelding was reluctant to stride out and he became concerned with its galloping action near the 500m. He subsequently eased his mount out of the race. His explanation was noted. A subsequent veterinary examination was requested on NATIVE LUCK which revealed that the horse returned not striding out freely. NATIVE LUCK, which raced poorly, will be required to pass a 1000m gallop trial and veterinary examination prior to being declared to race again.
