When questioned regarding the performance of SPEED STAR, Jockey HK Cheng stated
that he was instructed to get a good jump, sit where comfortable and do his best in the
home straight. He said that after jumping from a wide barrier, he was unable to get
across and was forced to race wide throughout the race and in the home straight, his
mount hung inwards at the 350M and the 250M, obliging him to stop and straighten on
both occasions. He said that shortly afterwards, near the 200M, he changed his whip
from the right hand to the left hand to try and keep SPEED STAR on a straighter course
which he accomplished. The Stewards told Jockey HK Cheng that they were concerned
about his lack of vigour within the last 200M. Jockey HK Cheng stated that he was
unable to display his normal vigour in his left hand as he is an accustomed right hand
whip rider. The Stewards told Jockey HK Cheng that they were not entirely satisfied
with his ride and gave him the benefit of the doubt on this occasion and told him to ride
all is mounts out in future so as to leave no room for query.
